Lake County Landfill Launches Mattress Recycling Program

Effective January 28, 2024, Lake County Landfill will start recycling mattresses and box springs.

The Landfill was awarded a grant of $18,900.00 through CDPHE (RREO program) to purchase a 53-foot trailer that will be used to divert mattresses/box springs from the Landfill.  The Landfill is working with Spring Back Colorado Mattress Recycling - a nonprofit that recycles 100% of non-soiled mattresses and box springs. They work to achieve a triple bottom line: People, Planet, and Purpose by fully recycling post-consumer mattresses and box springs.

Landfill users may bring mattresses and box springs to the Landfill beginning January 28th. The Landfill team will assess the condition of the mattress and or box spring to determine if it is recyclable or not. Mattresses cost $25 dollars to dispose of or recycle at the Landfill. However, Spring Back Colorado Mattress Recycling charges $35 per mattress and box spring to recycle.  Your $25 payment helps with this cost, and the Landfill will pay the additional $10.00 required to recycle the mattresses or box spring if it is in a recyclable condition.
