Contractors

The Lake County Building Department requires all contractors who perform work within the County to be registered with the Lake County Building Department. Please register using the Contractor Registration Form - 2024 (PDF).

All contractors will be put on a list that will be available to the public.

All registrations will expire at the end of each calendar year, and will be required to be renewed by January 31st of each year or before any work is performed.

All contractors will be required to carry a minimum of one million dollar liability insurance coverage.

Please note that all contractors will be required to provide a copy of their current certificate of insurance to keep on file with the building department.

Contractor Testing Information & Access

Evidence of testing will be required by December 1 2022. There are five tests that Lake County will be accepting for General Contractor Registration.

  • G13 - Residential Building Contractor (C)
    • Only accessible in person
    • This test will suffice for contractors working strictly with Residential projects (IRC Code Projects)
  • G12 - Building Contractor (B)
    • Only accessible in person
    • This test will suffice for contractors working strictly with Commercial projects (IBC Code Projects)
  • G11 - General Building Contractor (A)
    • Only accessible in person
    • These test cover the subject matter for both Commercial and Residential projects.
  • B1 - Residential Building Inspector
    • Available Online
    • This test will suffice for contractors working strictly with Residential projects (IRC Code Projects)
  • B2 - Commercial Building Inspector
    • Available Online
    • This test will suffice for contractors working strictly with Commercial projects (IBC Code Projects)

In-Person Instruction

To access In-Person tests you can go to the Pearson VUE - ICC - Exam Catalog to create an account, this will be a Non-Authorized exam. Once you have an account created, you can search the catalog using the test code you are looking to take (G13, G12, and G11). You will then follow the process to schedule with a testing location.

Online Instructions

To purchase an Online test you can go to MyICC to create an account. Next you will want to go to the ICC Exam Shop and scroll down to either B1 or B2 exam. Code Cycle should be 2018 or 2021, Exam Format: Pronto, you will select who is taking the test, and complete the purchase. If you believe you have qualifying licensure with another jurisdiction, you will need to submit that with your contractor registration for Building Official review. It is best to submit, approved license/registration by the jurisdiction, what the requirements of that jurisdiction are, and any associated documents submitted to the jurisdiction.
